James Aggrey Bob Orengo

James Aggrey Bob Orengo is a distinguished Kenyan lawyer, human rights activist, and politician, currently serving as the Governor of Siaya County since 2022. Born on February 22, 1951, in Kasipul Kabondo, Homabay County, he rose to prominence early in life, becoming the University of Nairobi student president in 1973 and later the youngest Member of Parliament in 1980 at just 29 years old. Orengo was part of the famous “Seven Bearded Sisters,” a group of MPs who challenged Daniel arap Moi’s one-party regime and fought for multiparty democracy. Over the decades, he has held key political roles, including Minister for Lands in the coalition government under President Mwai Kibaki, Senator for Siaya, and now Governor. Beyond politics, Orengo is celebrated for his legal career, having defended political prisoners and contributed to Kenya’s constitutional reforms, earning the prestigious title of Senior Counsel. Married to Betty Murungi and father of six, he remains a central figure in Kenya’s democratic journey, known for his resilience, sharp intellect, and shifting but impactful political alliances.
